Products

How is print-on-demand (POD) more sustainable than conventional manufacturing?

Our stock:

Traditional retailers produce items before putting them up for sale, so they’re always manufactured in bulk to save money. In contrast, Its Only A Movie only makes products when an order is placed, limiting our stock to items that already have a buyer. This lets us avoid the overproduction that is widespread in the rest of the industry. Unsold stock is usually thrown out or burned, with fashion retailers alone wasting 92 million tons of textile each year. In POD, waste mainly comes from items damaged during printing, and our suppliers’ rate of damages is consistent with the industry standard.

Our fulfilment:

Direct-to-garment (DTG) printing is more sustainable than other more outdated apparel printing methods, such as screen printing. Not only does screen printing use a lot of water and plastisol inks that don’t biodegrade, but it’s also generally used for bulk orders, which leads to overproduction. In comparison, DTG printing is more eco-friendly because items get printed only when they’re ordered, and this method can be used for single-item printing.Back to the top

What type of ink do you use?

DTG products

For DTG products, we use Kornit Water-based and NeoPigment inks that are Oeko-Tex™ certified, which means they are safe to print on children’s clothing too, and reduce environmental waste. These inks provide a high washing colorfast AATCC rating of 4.

Sublimation products

We use Mimaki Dye Sublimation Ink Sb411 and Sawgrass SubliJet HD ink for sublimation products. Both of these inks are Oeko-Tex™ certified. For some sublimation products, we also use MYSUBLI-E Sublimation Transfer Ink.

Phone cases

We use Mimaki UV Inkjet Ink Lus 120 ink for phone cases. This ink is GREENGUARD Gold certified, which means the ink meets the gold certification for building materials, finishes, and furnishings.

Posters

For posters, we use Epson UltraChrome GS3 ink. This ink is also GREENGUARD Gold certified.

Other non-apparel products

For mugs, we use Sawgrass SubliJet HD ink. For selected non-apparel products, stickers, and canvas, we use EPSON SC80610/80600 ink.Back to the top

What technology is used to print on t-shirts (and other fabric products)?

Our standard process is the Direct to Garment (DTG) method of printing. That means we can create photo-quality prints, the amount of colours used doesn’t affect pricing, and there aren’t any order minimums. We use Kornit printers for all DTG-printed garments. The white underbase is always applied when the design is:Colourful White or has white elements Entirely black and will be printed on a black or very dark grey garmentNote: White Fleck Triblend and Ash colours aren’t 100% white and an underbase may be used on these if the design contains white elements.Back to the top

How does fabric blend affect print quality?

DTG printing process is best suited for garments that are 100% cotton. So if you’re looking for the most opaque result, 100% cotton is your best bet. This fabric generally has a better result due to its tight weave. However, there are exceptions to this. If a cotton is too thick, it can absorb more of the ink and result in a faded look.Back to the top

How are your products packaged for shipment?

As a general rule of thumb, all our products are packaged in paper or plastic mailers or cardboard boxes.Depending on local supply availability, packaging can be made of recycled, partially recycled, or virgin materials. Whenever needed, we use clear mailers, tissue paper, foam pouches, or bubble wrap to protect products from breaking or scratching. The most commonly used packaging in our facilities is a post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic mailer. If there’s more than one product, after putting each item in its own separate transparent polymer bag, we then place them all together in a PCR polymer mailer.PCR plastics are made from items people recycle every day, like plastic bags and bottles. Most of our PCR plastics are made from shopping bags and wrapping films. The amount of PCR in the packaging differs for each fulfilment location, but it’s at least 50% for the outside (white or grey) poly mailer bags and at least 30% for the inside (clear) bags used in multi-item shipments.Below is an extensive list of various product categories and their packaging descriptions.

Apparel and other textile products

Textile products, including clothing and home & living products like towels, blankets, pillowcases, etc., are generally packaged in post-consumer recycled (PCR) polymer mailers. If there’s more than one product, after putting each item in its own separate transparent polymer bag, we then place them all together in a PCR polymer mailer.

Hats

Structured hats are packaged in corrugated cardboard boxes. Beanies are packed in post-consumer recycled (PCR) polymer mailers, just like other apparel items.

Home & living

Most sublimated home textile items go in post-consumer recycled (PCR) polymer mailers. Large products and oversized multi-item shipments are packaged in cardboard boxes.Mugs, water bottles, tumblers, and other drinkware are packaged in cardboard boxes.

Stationery

We use kraft envelopes or resealable plastic bags with stay-flat inserts to pack stickers, depending on the location. Similarly, we use kraft envelopes to package greeting cards and postcards.Journals are shipped in flat paper mailers, while notebooks and calendars are packed in cardboard boxes.

Wall art

Canvases and framed posters also come in cardboard boxes ranging in dimensions from 12 × 18 × 2 to 28 × 38 × 6 in.Framed posters are first wrapped in tissue paper to protect them from scratches and then wrapped in a layer of adhesive bubble wrap or a foam pouch.Posters are shipped in triangular kraft boxes to ensure safe delivery and avoid using plastic caps. In several locations, we use stay-flat envelopes for posters in size 8 × 10 in.Back to the top
